The importance of this support comes in times of emergency, such as what happened to a mother and son, who had to turn to Apple Watch for help in a car accident. This is the latest known case where the tech giant Apple devices have helped save the lives of its users. This situation involved a car accident in which an alcoholic driver crashed into the car where Kacie Anderson and her baby son were following. Unable to reach her iPhone, this mother decided to use Apple Watch to contact the emergency medical service and ask for help. The SOS mode is a feature that has been present in these devices since the arrival of watchOS 3 in 2016.
In describing the accident and the following moments, Kacie revealed how she was able to call the emergency teams using only Apple Watch. “The moment he hit us, everything inside the car flew. My face hit the steering wheel, the headrest again the steering wheel, and then the window. I erased for about a minute and could not see. My eyes were open, but everything I saw was black. My hands searched my phone and then I realized I had my watch and ordered it to call 911”. Although her son did not suffer any injuries, in Kacie’s case the medical care was important given the seriousness of her injuries and was assisted on the spot before being transported to the hospital.
The function that Kacie Anderson used to save herself and her son has been on Apple Watch since 2016. Just a long tap on the side button of the clock to pop up a menu with the possibility of calling emergency help by sliding the SOS emergency option, to Siri who can make phone calls. In Apple Watch series 1 and series 2, the user can use this function but still need to have the iPhone close by. Now, with the Apple Watch series 3, with LTE (only in some countries, as is the case in the United States), it is not even necessary to have the iPhone close by. This function sends the aid request to the emergency services and sends the location of the person requesting the aid. This is yet another concrete example of how the devices we use on a day-to-day basis can help users and especially how the tech giant Apple has integrated these aids into their equipment.
